What is an engagement ring?

What is an engagement ring? The ring given to a woman during a marriage proposal is called an engagement ring. In Germany, the term 'Verlöbnis' is used officially for a proposal, though 'Verlobung' is the common term.
The most common engagement ring given by men is white gold, followed by sterling silver and gold rings. Rose gold and platinum take fourth and fifth place.

76.4% of women wear an engagement ring with a single diamond (mainly brilliant-cut diamonds) as a gemstone, the so-called ‘solitaire’. 14, 4 % have a ring set with several diamonds.
Inspired by fashion influences, 6.3% of women own engagement rings with coloured gemstones such as sapphires, emeralds or rubies. Only 2.9 % would like an engagement ring with no stone at all

The classic prong setting with six prongs, as seen here in the model The One

Giving and wearing
In the past, it was customary for a man to purchase engagement rings in pairs. He gave one to his beloved as a gift and wore the other himself.
In the last century, the Anglo-Saxon variant prevailed in Europe, where only the woman receives an engagement ring. In Germany, women wear this on the ring finger of their left hand.
For the proposal ritual, the man purchases the ring in secret and surprises his partner with it when he proposes. If she answers with the three magical words ‘Yes, I do!’, the engagement is finalised.
The planning for the wedding and the purchase of the wedding rings begins.

What distinguishes a classic engagement ring?
The jewellery classic, a solitaire ring with a six-piece setting - known as a Tiffany setting - made of white gold is the most common choice. This high-quality engagement ring type is characterised by a solitaire, a single diamond that is often set in a raised position.

We mould our high-quality engagement rings from the precious metals gold, silver or platinum. For those who subsequently wear the engagement ring together with the wedding ring, we recommend choosing the same precious metal for both.

By the way: Over 60% of couples in Germany purchase gold wedding rings although only around 10% of engagement rings are actually made from this metal. Most engagement rings are made of white gold or silver.

Diamonds - a guide to selection, quality and certification
A diamond is the crowning glory for any ring. The perfect engagement ring is created in combination with a high-quality alloyed precious metal. Diamonds are the most precious gemstones in the world and their everlasting sparkle symbolises the eternal love of two people.

The diamond sizes we have available are between 0.03 and 3.00 carats (ct). The choice of five diamond qualities – H/SI, G/SI, G/VS, G/IF, D/IF (flawless) – rounds off our range.
On request, we can find any diamond through our worldwide network of diamond specialists – including the diamond of your choice.

There are various settings for diamond engagement rings. In a classic engagement ring, the goldsmith sets a single stone, and this is then referred to as a solitaire ring (French ‘solitaire’: single).

Other diamond settings suitable for engagement rings can be a centre stone with two stones set on either side. Engagement rings with several stones and partially or fully set rings, known as eternity rings, are currently also very popular.

The brilliant cut - a classic for engagement rings

Engagement rings are most commonly set with brilliant-cut diamonds. The brilliant (French ‘brillant(e)’: shining, brilliant) is a round diamond cut according to strict specifications. It has 57 facets, or 58 if the point is cut. Facets are the cut surfaces of a polished gemstone.

In 1919, Belgian mathematician and gemmologist Marcel Tolkowsky invented the brilliant cut, which is still popular today. In Germany, the fine cut developed by Eppler and Klüppelberg in 1938 is considered the ideal cut for diamonds. It builds on the original brilliant cut and optimises it for even better brilliance.

Only flawless diamonds with an excellent cut and no inclusions develop this brilliance, this special sparkle called fire. No wonder they are the gemstone of choice for classic engagement rings.
Engagement rings FAQ: important questions to ask before purchasing online.

In this section, we answer questions that are important to ask before purchasing engagement rings.

The 4 Cs: Carat, Colour, Clarity, Cut

Diamond rings with pavé:
more stones, more sparkle!

4. Cut:
A precise cut is an important symbol of quality. Flawless diamonds with a cut quality of ‘very good’ or ‘excellent’ have a unique brilliance, known as ‘fire’.
Important quality criteria for diamonds:

The 4 Cs: Carat, Colour, Clarity, Cut

1. Carat:
The weight of a diamond is given in carats (ct.). 1 carat corresponds to a gemstone weight of 0.2 grams.

2. Colour:
The scale for the colour of a diamond ranges from D to Z, from very fine white to shades of yellow. As very fine white diamonds are rare, they are considered particularly valuable. The more colourful the ring material, the less noticeable the colour of the diamond.
Our tip: For the stone to appear white, the colour G (‘fine white’) is sufficient up to a size of 1.5 carats.

3. Clarity:
The gemmologist - an expert in gemstones - determines the clarity with the naked eye and under a loupe with 10x magnification. Each stone is assigned a quality grade. These range from 'no inclusions' (IF, loupe clean) to 'Inclusions very easily visible to the naked eye' (PI3, Pique III). Our SI diamonds are considered ‘eye-clean’ (eye-clean) as they have no visible inclusions.

4. Cut:

Diamond certificates: What does GIA stand for?

The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) is a global organisation that conducts research on diamonds and gemstones. The institute trains gemmologists, assesses the quality of gemstones (especially diamonds) and awards the internationally recognised GIA certificate. They ensure that a diamond actually has the stated properties.

The GIA was founded in 1931. Since then, it has been working to ensure that dealers, collectors and purchasers have a better understanding of gemstones and their properties.

With the development of the ‘4 Cs’, the institute defined international diamond standards. These criteria – carat, clarity, colour and cut – are today used worldwide to grade the quality of diamonds.

Difference between diamond certificates and in-house certificates

Diamond certificates are generally issued for sizes of half a carat or more. The cost of the certificate would make smaller gemstones too expensive, making them unattractive to customers. We take a pragmatic approach: For smaller gemstones our certified gemstone experts issue in-house certificates.
We apply our experience and expertise right from the diamond-purchasing stage. In addition, we can rely on an international network of trusted dealers. Our team includes GIA-trained gemmologists who test each precious stone for authenticity and record its properties.

Each piece of jewellery sold with precious stones comes with a certificate from our company or, for stones larger than 0.30 ct., a certificate from the GIA.

Diamond shapes – more than just round

In addition to the brilliant cut, a variety of different cuts have been developed over time. In the industry, these are known as ‘fancy cuts’. Below is a list of the most frequently purchased diamond shapes:

NameDescription of shape
Brilliant cutThe classic, round brilliant cut, ignites an extraordinary fire
Princess cutSquare diamond cut: modern and elegant
Heart CutHeart-shaped cut: romantic and feminine Cushion cut: resembles the shape of a cushion, highly luminous
Pear Shapealso known as a teardrop: Feminine and baroque
Emerald Cut8-sided, rectangular basic shape, refinement of the round brilliant cut
Asscher Cut8-sided, square basic shape, based on the step cut
Oval CutAppears larger due to the oval cut and visually lengthens the finger

Certificated trade for peace of mind

We guarantee the impeccable quality of all diamonds purchased from us. They are certified and come from conflict-free sources.
All companies that mine and trade in our gemstones participate in the so-called Kimberley Process: they are committed to complying with global standards and to providing full traceability for each gemstone. This ensures fair working conditions throughout the entire supply chain, as well as the protection of people and nature.

Diamond quality in a nutshell

The heavier and more colourless a diamond, the fewer inclusions it has and the more precisely it is cut, the more expensive it is. For the quality of a diamond to be graded ‘excellent’, it must have an ideal balance of the four quality criteria (the ‘4 Cs’).

By the way: you won't find any imitation diamonds, such as cubic zirconia, in our collection. While cubic zirconia is perfectly acceptable as a gemstone for a good-value women's ring, gemstones such as zirconia do not do justice to the unique, romantic event of a proposal.

What types of settings are there for engagement rings?

Gemstone settings play a decisive role in the presentation and protection of the precious stone. Not only do they influence the appearance of the ring, but also the light reflection and therefore the sparkle of the gemstone.

Each setting has its own advantages, which we will clarify below. The choice of the right setting depends on personal preferences, the lifestyle of the wearer and the type of gemstone.

Claw or prong setting

Diamonds achieve maximum brilliance in settings with four or six claws, which raise the gemstone above the shank. The six-piece setting is the classic choice for engagement rings and has gained worldwide fame as the ‘Tiffany setting’.

Prongs are cylindrically shaped elements of a prong setting. They hold the diamond securely in the centre and are bent slightly inwards over the stone by the setter.

The prongs sit on or are set into the ring shank and are usually made of the same precious metal as the ring itself.

Bezel setting

The bezel setting is characterised by its simple shape, which encloses the diamond like a bowl. It has an elegant appearance, but naturally lets less light through to the gemstone than other settings, as it shields it from the sides.

Bezel settings completely surround the stone with metal, providing it with excellent protection. It is particularly suitable for active wearers, as the gemstone is held securely and firmly in place.

This setting conceals minor inclusions in the gemstone, making it a popular choice for engagement rings. It gives the ring a modern, minimalist look that appeals to many couples.

All in all, it offers an elegant and practical solution for those who appreciate both aesthetics and security.

Tension ring setting

Tension rings enclose the stone directly in the ring band. They look modern and simple, but slightly reduce the incidence of light and therefore the sparkle of the diamond.

One advantage of the tension ring setting is that it holds the gemstone securely without additional prongs or metal parts. It allows light to enter from the side, which gives the stone a little more radiance compared to the closed bezel setting.

We recommend this setting as an alternative to the bezel setting for anyone who does physical work. This is because this setting also protects the mounted stone from external mechanical influences.

Pavé, channel and burnish setting variants

Other settings for gemstones take one of the three types of setting already mentioned and expand or modify them.

In a pavé setting, the stones are set one after the other along the shank of the ring. Also in this case, prongs are used. There are usually four prongs, arranged in pairs on the side of the shank, which hold the diamond in the centre.

The channel setting holds the gemstones laterally in a channel running parallel to the shank of the ring. In the burnish setting, the diamonds are embedded individually and almost completely in the shank of the ring. Similar to the bezel setting, they protrude only slightly.

Five popular precious metals for engagement rings

We offer five precious metals and eight alloys for almost all rings. The best-selling diamond rings are made of 14-carat gold, with over thirty percent of them being white gold rings. Yellow gold and 925 silver (sterling silver) are in second and third place, closely followed by rose gold and platinum rings.

We do not sell rings made of 333 gold. The 8K alloy consists of only 33.3% fine gold. In Austria and Switzerland, jewellery made from 333 alloys is not considered high quality and is therefore marked separately.

Our jewellery is nickel-free and ideal for allergy sufferers.

Yellow, rose and white gold: details of the gold content in carats

Pure gold is relatively soft, which is why so-called alloys are used for jewellery, which contain other precious metals in addition to fine gold. These additives ensure the stability of the alloy.

The closer the value is to gold 999, the more pure gold (fine gold) the alloy contains. Gold 585 consists of 58.5% fine gold while gold 750 contains 75.0%.
In addition to 585 and 750, designations in carat (K) are also commonly used for the fineness. Gold 585 corresponds to the designation 14K and gold 750 to 18K.

Foundries use other precious metals, usually copper and silver, as additives to fine gold for alloys. Palladium, platinum, rhodium and iridium are also used. The proportion of added metals influences the colour and stability of the gold alloy. A higher proportion of copper results in a reddish alloy, while a higher proportion of white or grey precious metals results in a lighter alloy – white gold.

We do not sell rings made of 333 gold. The 8K alloy consists of only 33.3% fine gold. In Austria and Switzerland, jewellery made from 333 alloys is not considered high quality and is therefore marked separately.

Sterling silver (silver 925/-)
Silver 925/- (also known as sterling silver) processed in our atelier consists of 92.5% pure silver. It is harder and therefore more durable than pure silver. Our silver rings are made exclusively from this high-quality sterling silver.

Platinum 950/-Platinum
Platinum is one of the most valuable precious metals and in its pure form it is almost as soft as gold. Our foundry casts high-quality platinum alloys (platinum 950/-), which are significantly harder and noticeably heavier than gold. In addition to 95% platinum, these alloys contain copper.

Fine gold content and its marking with a stamp
The German fineness law (FeinGehG) stipulates that the fine metal content of precious metal jewellery must be indicated by a hallmark and a company mark. On the inside of each finished ring, our goldsmiths stamp the hallmark and the fineness of the precious metal it contains.

The hallmark is comparable to a seal of quality, the authenticity of which is guaranteed by the jewellery producer. We stamp our jewellery with the company logo ‘VR’ and either the fine gold content (585/- or 750/-), the silver content (925/-) or the platinum content (950/-).

Precious metals from controlled sources
In our atelier, we work exclusively with precious metals from controlled sources, for example from refineries based in the 'Golden city' of Pforzheim.

These sources are certified for their sustainable production. They obtain precious metals by recycling old jewellery, waste from jewellery production and scrap gold. The origin of the recycled metals is fully documented.

Organisations such as the Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC) check the entire supply chain. And if everything is compliant, they issue the refinery with a certificate.
